aging through a physician's lens

This exhibition surveys human aging from the perspective of a medical doctor who specializes in geriatrics.  In photographs taken over his twenty-five year career, Jeffrey M. Levine, M.D. explores one of the most important demographic transformations of today’s world.   Curated by Donna Glassford, Executive Director of Cultural Enrichment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, this show presents four themes of Dr. Levine’s work:  Frailty, Social Networks, Spirituality, and Self Expression.  Samples from each theme are presented above.  Dr. Levine presents his subjects as living art through the lens of his camera, capturing the vulnerability, dignity, and inner strength of our growing elderly population.

This show is directed toward raising awareness of the critical shortage of professional caregivers for the elderly, including physicians, nurses, social workers, and pharmacists.  The over 85 age group is the most rapidly growing sector of American society with a population over 4.2 million, yet there are less than 10,000 board certified geriatric physicians.  The show makes its debut at the National Arts Club on May 12, 2008 and will then travel to medical schools around the country.
